With each outpost you liberate you unlock two missions, one which involves rescuing a scientist from a small group of enemies. And the crafting system is completely gone too so hunting a little bit pointless. The various skill trees are simply gone, you still level up, but it's a linear path with each new level unlocking a pre-set upgrade. Then most of the already simple RPG elements have been simplified even more.

We played the PS3 version, and no doubt the PC will look a bit better. Yeah, they could've done a bit more with the vehicles I think. Jumping on a hang glider and soaking in the view was one of the best bits in the original, but here it's like pouring pink paint into my eyes.Īnd while you're talking about it, why stick with the crappy hang glider? This is meant to be balls out 80's action and we're still stuck with plain old hang gliders? Is it really too much to ask that they strap a rocket and some lasers on it? I mean, come on, this is simple stuff people. Yeah, I'm with you there, the whole world is just covered with this pink haze that makes it all look flat and dull. I mean, first of all, how did they make it so ugly? I get that it was 80s, but even the 80s wasn't that bad was it? Which doesn't sound so bad on paper but it took just about everything from Far Cry 3 and made it either slightly worse, or completely terrible.

It's basically just a miniature version of Far Cry 3, you have a brand new open world island to explore full of outposts that need liberating and animals that need hunting.
Well I might have warmed to the humour more if I was actually having fun with the game. This is one of the best game soundtracks of the year so far, and the men responsible for it are an Aussie duo called Power Glove. Things like the mission ripped straight out of Aliens, the constant terrible but awesome one liners, the amazing reload animations, and that great dino riders moment, so cool! And that music is just spot on 80's. Well fair enough, but I loved all the references and I wish more games went for this silly over the top angle. I just didn't find myself laughing at anything, a brief sympathy snort here and there. I dunno, I gotta say the whole "look how 80's we are" humor started to wear thin pretty quickly. And without spoiling too much, you're on a revenge mission to stop a rogue general who kills your best mate Sub Zero, and has diabolical plans to bring down the US government and fire some missiles, or something like that.Īctually Hex, I think you just spoilt everything, it's a ridiculously thin story that's just there so they can cram in as many references and cliches as they can, and that's not a bad thing. Now, Rex is appropriately voiced by Michael Biehn, who many will remember as Kyle Reese from The Terminator, and Hicks from Aliens, two of the greatest 80's action films. Sorry, Hex, can we get out of this 80's party? All this neon is giving me a perm and you don't want to see that. The year is 2007, it is the future and you are Rex Powercolt, a man turned into some kind of half terminator thanks to the nuclear apocalypse.
Apparently it all started off just as a bit of a joke game within the studio that ended up too good not to share, and now we have it. Wait! I think we need to set the mood a bit first Baj, that's better, now roll the montage!īlood Dragon is stand-alone expansion, and it's a love letter to cheesy 80's action movies. blood dragons! That shoot fricken lasers from their eyeballs! Roll the montage! Sadly the expansion doesn't have dinosaurs, but it does have dragons. But I think we can all agree it would have been better with dinosaurs.
Hex, I liked Far Cry 3, I didn't love it.
